Three subcontracted workers died on Thursday inside a sewer line in the Bambu Apus area of Cipayung, East Jakarta. The fatal incident began when one worker descended into the underground shaft and lost consciousness mid-ladder.

Seeing their colleague collapse, two other workers entered the sewer in a desperate attempt to rescue him. Both men were overcome by the same toxic atmosphere and lost consciousness shortly after entry, resulting in a triple fatality.

According to Abdul Wahid, the Chief of Operations for the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-department, rescuers located the three bodies at 10:20 AM local time. Emergency teams evacuated the victims immediately after the discovery.

Based on a statement from the East Jakarta Metro Police Public Relations Chief, AKP Made Budi, authorities have launched an investigation into the matter. Investigators have questioned eight witnesses to establish the exact timeline of the tragedy.

The police official confirmed that the casualties include two Indonesian citizens and one Chinese national. The families of the local workers have claimed the bodies, declining post-mortem examinations.

The primary cause of death is suspected to be toxic gas inhalation. Officials have not yet specified the exact nature or composition of the lethal gas encountered by the men during the operation.
