Emergency rescue teams gather near the sewer site in Cipayung East Jakarta where three workers died

Three workers died during an inspection inside a sewer in the Cipayung area of East Jakarta on Saturday. The tragedy unfolded when two of the men entered the underground conduit sequentially in a desperate bid to rescue their colleague who had first lost consciousness below.

According to an eyewitness named Febri, 31, the initial worker descended into the sewer to commence operations. After a short period had elapsed, the man failed to respond to the calls from his teammates stationed above on the surface.

A foreign national worker, believed to be the foreman responsible for the site, began to shout for the missing man. The foreigner grew anxious when no answer came and turned to the local residents for assistance. Febri noted that the locals were confused because they could not understand the foreign language.

Despite explicit warnings from the bystanders not to descend, the foreign foreman chose to enter the sewer. "People told him to stop, that one person inside was enough, but he persisted because he likely felt responsible for the crew," Febri stated.

Shortly after the foreign worker descended, his voice went silent. He shouted once from within the darkness of the pit, and then there was only silence. A third worker then insisted on going down to help before the authorities could arrive, ignoring further pleas from the crowd, and he too became unresponsive.

Based on the witness account, residents then contacted the fire department for an evacuation rescue. The emergency responders arrived approximately one hour later, but by that time, all three individuals were already unconscious.

Local residents observed that previous sewer maintenance followed a stricter protocol. In the past, the hatch was left open for three hours to allow toxic gases to clear before anyone descended. Febri confirmed the presence of a strong, pungent odor emanating from the opening during the incident.
