Federal immigration authorities are urging officials in North Carolina to keep an illegal immigrant behind bars after a hit-and-run left three people dead. Javiel Pena Sola, a citizen of El Salvador, allegedly struck a vehicle on July 18 in Salisbury before fleeing on foot.

A local witness, Quindel Woods, described the aftermath to reporters, stating he heard screaming as bystanders pulled one of the victims from the wreckage. Pena Sola now faces three counts of hit-and-run involving serious injury or death.
Based on statement details from Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis, federal agents previously arrested Pena Sola in 2016. However, the Obama administration released him into the country, after which he re-entered the United States through Arizona in April 2022.
Court records indicate Pena Sola has a history of legal trouble, including Maryland convictions for reckless endangerment, fleeing the scene of an accident, and driving without a license. ICE has lodged a formal detainer to ensure he remains in local custody.
