The decision follows public admissions by Trump that he contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino after USA forward Folarin Balogun received a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The red card carried a standard one-match suspension. However, FIFA suspended Balogun's ban for twelve months, clearing him to face Belgium in the round of sixteen. Based on statements from UEFA and the Belgian FA, the decision crossed an established boundary and compromised the integrity of the sport.
Based on reports from The Times, Klaveness warned that altering regulations for political leaders creates a dangerous precedent. "When you bend a rule like this, you're on a slippery slope that will put the whole game at risk," Klaveness stated, calling on FIFA leadership to openly acknowledge the error.
This ethical filing marks the second grievance Norway has brought against FIFA involving Trump, following a previous complaint regarding the presentation of the FIFA Peace Prize. Meanwhile, prominent figures across European football, including La Liga President Javier Tebas, continue to demand accountability from Infantino.
