Jakarta Traffic Gridlock Hits Cawang on First Day of School

Heavy traffic congestion with cars and buses during the first day of school in Jakarta

Heavy traffic congestion with cars and buses during the first day of school in Jakarta

The roads of Jakarta choked with heavy traffic on Monday morning as the new school year began. Gridlock stalled the movement of vehicles across major thoroughfares in the capital city. A prominent bottleneck formed at the Halim Baru traffic light near UKI Cawang, slowing the westward advance toward Jalan MT Haryono.

According to updates posted by the Traffic Management Center (TMC) Polda Metro Jaya on their X account, the congestion gripped the intersection of Jalan Mayjen Sutoyo leading toward Jalan MT Haryono and Jatinegara. The vehicles sat heavy in the morning heat. In contrast, the lanes splitting toward Cililitan, Halim, the Jagorawi Toll Road, and the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road remained smooth and free flowing.

Video footage released by the authorities showed a dense crawl of commuter cars, motorcycles, and Transjakarta buses moving inches at a time. Traffic police stood in the middle of the asphalt, working to untangle the knot of vehicles. Meanwhile, a bottleneck tightened Jalan M Ridwan Rais in Central Jakarta, where excavation work in front of the tax office squeezed traffic down to a single narrow lane.

Based on the reports, the delays also stretched East toward the Kampung Melayu area. The vehicles on Jalan Abdullah Syafei backed up significantly toward Jalan Raya Casablanca, though the opposite direction stayed clear. By mid-morning, the traffic along the artery of Jalan Gatot Subroto heading toward Kuningan eased into a steady rhythm.
