Jakarta Council Questions Free Public Transport Expansion Plan

The Jakarta City Transportation Council (DTKJ) has proposed expanding free public transport privileges to six additional social categories. This recommendation comes amidst ongoing discussions regarding fare adjustments for the Transjakarta bus network. However, local lawmakers are urging caution before implementing the policy.

Nova Harivan Paloh, Chairman of Commission B of the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD DKI), stated on Friday that the proposal requires deeper study and more fundamental substance regarding data validity. He emphasized that the administration must ensure targeted subsidies reach the right recipients.

According to the DTKJ proposal, the six new categories include companions of people with severe disabilities, routine referral patients, and low-income students who do not receive existing government educational aid. Active job seekers, recovery-phase disaster victims, and micro-entrepreneurs fostered by the Jakarta government are also on the list.

Based on Nova's assessment, the category for active job seekers remains highly problematic. He noted that Jakarta attracts job seekers from across the nation's provinces, many of whom do not hold local Jakarta identity cards. Nova questioned the specific criteria for defining an active job seeker in this context.

Regarding underprivileged students excluded from current aid programs like KJP Plus and KJMU, Nova demanded strict data verification. He argued that since current programs already cover low-income achievers, the sources for this new data must be scrutinized thoroughly to prevent administrative overlap.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung confirmed that the regional government is currently reviewing the proposal in its final stages. He noted that while fifteen categories currently enjoy free public transport, any upcoming fare adjustments will inevitably affect certain groups, making the review essential.
