Ndalem Padmosusastro Vandalism Case Stalls After Six Months

The historic Ndalem Padmosusastro heritage site in Solo faces legal disputes over its destruction

The historic Ndalem Padmosusastro heritage site in Solo faces legal disputes over its destruction

The house of the old court poet stood for a long time in Solo, but now the law moves slow around its broken walls. For six months, the reported destruction of Ndalem Padmosusastro, a site designated as an Object Deemed Cultural Heritage, has remained unresolved. The man accused of the damage, Mario Satya Wibowo, stated on Wednesday that he has received no official summons from the Balai Pelestarian Kebudayaan Wilayah X.

The lawyers have checked the addresses and the names on the papers. According to Bambang Ary Wibowo, the attorney for the accusers, the authorities asked him for the suspect's whereabouts. He gave them the address of the old house itself, because that was where the previous legal papers were answered. He said he knows no other place where the man might hide from the law.

The police in Jawa Tengah have taken the statements of the witnesses and the owners of the land. Based on reports from the scene, the dismantling began on a Thursday in late January when one of the heirs brought tools to the historic structure. Other heirs saw the work and called it illegal, taking their grievances to the state to protect what remained of the poet's legacy.

If a man does not answer the call of the court, the police must go find him. Attorney Bambang Ary Wibowo stated that the case will not stop simply because the suspect remains absent. He believes the destruction of the heritage site was clear, and if the standard warnings fail, the authorities must use force to bring the man before the law.
