"I was really shocked by the anger, by this idea that I’d duped the audience," Headey said. She emphasized that filming alongside 3,000 extras made the environment intense and overwhelming.
Headey explained that maintaining her emotional focus required setting firm physical boundaries. Filming nude in front of thousands would have forced her into a defensive mindset. "I wouldn’t have been able to do the emotional part of the job," she stated. "I’d have been in full-on defensive mode."
Based on her account, years of experience in the industry gave her the authority to protect herself. She noted that younger actresses often lacked the confidence or leverage to set similar boundaries on set. Headey praised body double Rebecca Van Cleave, who performed the physical nudity while Headey stayed on set for three days to deliver the emotional performance.
The actress also criticized historical power dynamics in Hollywood that pressured young women into uncomfortable roles. Reflecting on the influence of the #MeToo movement, Headey noted that modern performers are far more empowered to reject exploitation.
