At 14 years old, she snuck out of her quarters one evening to dine with older girls at the Olden, an upscale establishment. The youth tasted wine and ordered a traditional meat fondue.
The trouble began with a moment of misguided culinary curiosity. Bergen recalled trying to add flavor to the hot cooking fat by pouring her wine directly into the pot. The reaction was immediate. A massive flame erupted from the table, rising rapidly to catch the ceiling of the establishment.
The restaurant emptied into the cold alpine night. Based on her account, the entire venue required evacuation while snow fell outside. It was an act of teenage carelessness that the local community would not quickly forget.
Years later, the actress returned to the same Swiss resort. An old acquaintance recognized her face not from her Hollywood fame, but from the chaos of that winter evening. The man asked if she was the girl who had nearly destroyed the Olden, and she admitted the truth.
The interview with Danson touched on other chapters of her early life. During the same conversation, Bergen noted that she had also gone on dates with notable public figures, including Donald Trump and Henry Kissinger, long before her decade-long run on television.
