Fetterman stated that Sanders helped him secure the Democratic nomination and now must apologize to the victims, particularly the woman who accused Platner of rape.
The Senate campaign of Platner faced immediate distress after Jenny Racicot detailed the alleged assault in interviews with Politico and CNN. Racicot alleged that the Senate hopeful entered her home uninvited while intoxicated nearly five years ago and forced himself upon her despite her resistance.
Based on reports from Politico, Racicot, who was seeing Platner intermittently at the time, cut all ties with him after the incident. She recalled the specific moment when she realized the encounter was no longer her choice.
The campaign for Platner issued a formal statement denying the accusations made by Racicot. The statement added that the candidate was taking time to reflect on the best path forward for his political future.
Prominent Democrats, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Representative Ro Khanna, D-Calif., quickly withdrew their support from the embattled nominee and urged him to exit the high-stakes Senate race.
According to a statement released on Tuesday, Sanders shared a similar perspective regarding the candidate's future. Sanders noted he had spoken with Platner about the situation in Maine and recommended that he step aside in light of the very serious allegations.
Fetterman suggested that Sanders should consider staying out of upcoming political races, criticizing his past support for controversial figures. The Pennsylvania Democrat had previously questioned Platner's conduct on the Kik platform and pressured him to release his message logs.
Expressing his condolences to Racicot on Monday, Fetterman praised her courage for coming forward with the details. He stated that it was very brave for her to share her story and expressed deep regret for the trauma she experienced.
