Police Warn Against Cyber Scams Using Faked Google Meet Calls

A new wave of cyber scams has surfaced online. A viral social media post revealed a video conference involving three accounts. The accounts claimed to represent investigators from Polda Metro Jaya, the Kejaksaan Negeri Jakarta Selatan, and the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center, known as PPATK.

The digital actors used official logos for the Kejaksaan Negeri Jakarta Selatan and PPATK accounts. The account representing the Polda Metro Jaya investigator displayed the face of a man. The citizen who uploaded the footage expressed confusion. The user questioned the legality of conducting narcotics raids through digital screens.

The police responded to the growing public concern. South Jakarta Metro Police Chief Commissioner Budi Hermanto confirmed the operation is a coordinated fraudulent scheme.

Based on the tactics reported by the victim, the individuals who claim to be members of the police force are swindlers, Budi Hermanto told reporters on Friday.

According to the police chief, legitimate law enforcement agencies do not conduct criminal investigations or procedures through Google Meet. The police do not ask citizens to hand over private financial records during active cases.

The authorities urged the public to remain vigilant against these digital threats. Budi Hermanto advised citizens to report any irregular requests from individuals claiming to hold official authority.

The public must not follow the directions of these actors, Budi Hermanto said. He warned citizens to never give out personal data, one-time passwords, personal identification numbers, or perform wire transfers.

Those who believe they have fallen victim to the scam should report the incident to the nearest police station immediately. Citizens can also reach out through the police hotline at 110 for swift action.
