The children were forced to sit with men, drink alcohol against their will, sing karaoke, and ultimately engage in sexual acts.
The men paid between 200,000 and 250,000 rupiahs for each encounter. Based on statements from the investigators, the children received a small tip of about 100,000 rupiahs from the operators, along with whatever extra the customers threw their way. Some of the victims had been trapped in this cycle for two to three years, while others had arrived only three months ago.
The police learned that some children were deceived completely, arriving with no knowledge of the final physical demands, while others understood the grim progression of the work from the start. Officers have rounded up 37 victims and tested their urine. They also questioned 17 witnesses to understand the full scope of the business.
Twelve suspects have been detained and named in the case. They worked as pimps, cashers, and marketing hands for the establishments. They now face severe charges under the Child Protection Act and the Sexual Violence Crimes Law, which carry prison sentences of up to 15 years for the worst offenses.
