Jakarta is reviving its local waste processing facilities to curb the heavy flow of garbage shipped to the TPST Bantargebang landfill in Bekasi, West Java. Governor Pramono Anung stated that the provincial government is moving aggressively to reactivate Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Waste Processing Sites, known as TPS 3R, across the capital.

He emphasized that the city will invest in specialized equipment and build partnerships with private companies to process waste at the neighborhood level before it ever reaches the central landfill.
"We are investing in equipment and collaborating with the private sector so that waste which was poorly managed in the past can now be resolved at the TPS 3R stage," Pramono said. He expressed confidence that sorting and treating garbage near its source will drastically reduce the remaining residue sent to Bekasi.
The operational shift comes as Jakarta prepares to phase out open dumping practices at TPST Bantargebang. Based on statements from city officials, the capital has begun transitioning toward a controlled landfill system, starting with the gradual closure of active dumping zones to improve environmental standards.
According to the Jakarta Environmental Agency Head Dudi Gardesi, workers began installing physical cover media over Zone 2 at the facility on Friday. Dudi noted that covering the active mounds is essential to controlling bad odors, suppressing gas emissions, and preventing rainwater from creating toxic leachate.
