The physical demands of cinema require a heavy price. For his latest role as the legendary Greek hero in Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic film, The Odyssey, the Oscar-winning actor Matt Damon underwent a transformation that altered more than his appearance. Speaking on the latest episode of Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, Damon revealed he permanently removed gluten from his diet after discovering a hidden food sensitivity that had long plagued his health.

According to Damon, the new dietary discipline allowed him to drop to 167 pounds, a weight he had not seen since his high school days. He previously walked around between 185 and 200 pounds. The actor noted that the lifestyle change was absolute, requiring him to put his foot on the gas and eat less to meet Nolan's specific vision of a lean and strong warrior.
Giving up old pleasures brought a better life. Damon admitted on the podcast that he remains a big fan of bread, beer, pasta, and pizza, but the sacrifice was worth the reward. He stated that he did not realize the level to which gluten was affecting his daily well-being until it was gone. Based on his conversation with Poehler, many individuals of their generation grew up unaware of such dietary sensitivities, making the discovery a profound shift in his fifties.
This was not the first time the actor pushed his body to the brink for his craft. For the 1996 war drama Courage Under Fire, Damon lost between 40 and 50 pounds in roughly 100 days. That early attempt at physical transformation came with severe risks, as a doctor later warned him that the extreme regimen could have permanently shrunk his heart. For The Odyssey, however, Damon relied on a strict regimen guided by a medical professional and a personal trainer to achieve his goals safely.
