Bogor Mayor Warns Against Vigilante Sweeps of Transgender Women

Bogor Mayor Dedie Rachim urges public order and warns against vigilante sweeping operations

Bogor Mayor Dedie Rachim urges public order and warns against vigilante sweeping operations

A video has circulated widely on social media showing a group of young men conducting sweeping operations against transgender women, known locally as waria, in several areas of Bogor. The footage, captured at night, depicts youths chasing individuals through narrow alleys and market stalls. In one scene, a young man attempts to kick a fleeing individual, who manages to evade the blow.

According to Bogor Mayor Dedie Rachim, citizens must refrain from taking unilateral disciplinary actions. He stated that order should be maintained only by the proper authorities. "I have asked officers from the Satpol PP to conduct operations alongside joint TNI and Polri personnel to prevent any potential vigilantism," Dedie said when contacted on Friday.

The Head of the Bogor City Public Order Agency, Pupung Wahyu Permana, echoed this sentiment and urged the public to avoid unlawful acts. He stated that his agency plans to conduct joint monitoring and patrols with the local police and the Social Agency. These measures are designed to address the public unrest sparked by the viral video.

Based on statement from Pupung, there have been no official reports of transgender women disturbing public order in the area prior to the video's release. He emphasized that any individuals detained during the joint patrols would be handed over to the Social Agency for guidance and rehabilitation.

The local government and police continue to coordinate their schedules for the upcoming joint operations. Authorities hope that increased patrols will reassure the public and deter citizens from resorting to street justice.
