When asked directly by a supporter on social media whether Zubimendi could join the club, Pereiro answered with a single word: "NO". The journalist noted that the player faces a complicated year ahead after a grueling season.
The interest from Madrid is old. Xabi Alonso wanted the midfielder when he took the manager's seat at the end of the 2024/25 campaign. The player waited for Madrid, convinced that playing under Alonso was an unmissable opportunity.
Real Madrid hesitated. By the time the club explored the transfer, Arsenal had already secured the deal. The English club paid 70.4 million euros to Real Sociedad last summer to finalize a favorable structural agreement, despite a lower release clause. Zubimendi subsequently helped Arsenal reach the Champions League final and earned a place in the Spain squad for the 2026 World Cup.
