Combating Transnational Crime and Enhancing Joint Operations

The Thanh Thuy International Border Gate Guard Station in Vietnam's Nghe An province and Laos' Border Guard Company 252 have successfully sustained a 12-year twinning program, serving as a model for bilateral border management. Top military officials, including Colonel Tran Quang Trung of the Nghe An Border Guard and Colonel Channy Sisouk from the Bolikhamxay Military Command, gathered to evaluate their collaborative framework. This enduring partnership has proved essential in securing territorial sovereignty, maintaining regional stability, and strengthening the special diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

Since 2014, the two border units have conducted 35 bilateral patrols involving 664 personnel, alongside one provincial-level joint patrol to safeguard the national boundary system. Intelligence sharing remains a cornerstone of their operations, enabling both forces to react swiftly to emerging border incidents. This streamlined communication infrastructure has allowed both sides to maintain real-time situational awareness and synchronize tactical maneuvers along heavily forested terrain that is traditionally difficult to monitor.

The operational synergy has yielded significant results in combating transnational crimes, particularly drug trafficking, human smuggling, and illegal border crossings. Joint law enforcement efforts led by the Thanh Thuy Border Gate Station resulted in the interception of 42 criminal cases involving 50 suspects. Authorities seized 67 bricks of heroin, 179.5 kilograms of methamphetamine, over 78,000 synthetic drug pills, $10,000 in cash, and various military-grade weapons, with five critical cases solved directly via intelligence provided by the Laotian counterparts.

The scope of this bilateral defense framework continues to expand, with 10 border guard stations in Nghe An now officially twinned with nine Laotian border guard companies and one port police station. Moving forward, both military commands plan to scale up cross-border legal awareness campaigns for residents and establish early-warning systems. These localized initiatives are designed to foster sustainable economic development while maintaining a peaceful, stable, and highly secure trade corridor between Vietnam and Laos.
