Severe Infrastructure Damage and Prolonged Outages Expected

Terrified residents and stranded tourists across the US Pacific territories are making urgent preparations as Super Typhoon Bavi tracks directly toward the Marianas. Heavy rainfall and howling winds began lashing the islands over the weekend, clearing roads and forcing local business owners to board up premises ahead of the imminent Monday morning landfall.

The US National Weather Service reported that the storm is packing sustained winds of 260km/h with catastrophic gusts reaching up to 315km/h. Forecasters warned of life-threatening coastal inundation, with projected waves climbing as high as 10.7 meters, roughly equivalent to the height of a ten-story building.

Local business owners expressed deep anxiety over the impending economic toll, with some spending hundreds of dollars on emergency plywood while already struggling to cover overhead costs. "I cannot afford to lose so many days, it hurts," shared Pinky Cubacub, an eatery owner, while other residents expressed confidence in their concrete homes despite the fear felt by their families.

This latest extreme weather event follows closely on the heels of Super Typhoon Sinlaku in mid-April and Typhoon Mawar in 2023, both of which caused widespread devastation and prolonged blackouts. Meteorologists project that the tiny island of Rota will bear the brunt of the storm, potentially leaving non-reinforced structures entirely uninhabitable for months.
