Washington Endorses Framework to Foster Stability and Disarm Hezbollah

In a congratulatory message to US President Donald Trump marking America's 250th Independence Day, President Aoun emphasized the necessity of Washington's enduring partnership. He expressed hope that the newly brokered framework would allow Lebanon to move past devastating conflicts and enter an era of stability, a sentiment echoed by the US Embassy in Beirut which pledged commitment to a prosperous Lebanese future.

The bilateral breakthrough follows a US-backed framework agreement signed last week, aimed at permanently halting hostilities with the Hezbollah armed group in southern Lebanon. The treaty mandates the disarmament of Hezbollah, the strategic deployment of the Lebanese national army, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces, which initiated a massive ground and air campaign after Hezbollah joined regional hostilities on March 2.

Despite the diplomatic push, regional stability remains highly precarious as Hezbollah leaders formally rejected the accord due to the absence of a concrete Israeli withdrawal timetable. The ongoing conflict has exacted a severe humanitarian toll, with the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reporting 4,303 fatalities and over 12,202 injuries since the escalation began, severely damaging southern infrastructure.

Local recovery efforts are underway as Social Affairs Minister Haneen Sayed announced a relocation framework featuring prefabricated housing and rental subsidies for approximately 400,000 displaced citizens returning south. However, active skirmishes persist, with Israel's military confirming the neutralization of an armed operative near Majdal Zoun amidst ongoing cross-border missile strikes.
